Dog

There is a new animal getting to the chickens.
Instead of a fox it’s a dog.

Robert wants to try to catch it and teach it to trust us.
But, I am voting “no.” We’ve seen the dog around
outside the perimeter. We have no idea how it’s
getting in but it surely has. We know because Robert
caught him outside the back fence with a chicken
in its mouth.

He says the dog is showing signs of “playfulness.”
Which I don’t trust.

He said that when he went near the fence the dog
was darting from side to side like a dog with a
squeaky toy would do in order to keep it from you
but in a playful way.

I think the dog looks mangy.

I don’t know. We all have to vote “yes” in order for
any new people or new animals to be allowed
into our little area.

Tevyn, lovely as he is (yes that’s sarcasm)
actually addressed me today when the group was
discussing this and what he said made it incredibly
difficult to continue to “kill him with kindness.”

He looked straight at me and said, “where would
YOU be if we hadn’t all voted, ‘yes?’ ”

I could feel my face burning. I’m usually so composed
and ready with a comeback. That is what a witty
journalist should be able to do on the spot. Think of
something immediately to ask.

And yet. I didn’t. I just sat there burning up.
It wasn’t until later in the day that I thought of the
fact that if everyone has to vote “yes” then that
means Tevyn also voted for me to stay when I
showed up running from that terrible fake military
group.

He voted me to stay. Was it because his hand was
forced? Was it because he was being kind, taking
me in? What IS his problem?

Well. I’m still here and I’m not going anywhere.
Everyone else seems to have bonded with me
and I, them.

So. There’s that.

The guys are packed. It rained today. So we
urged them to wait one more day to leave for
supplies.

I begged them to take me along. I need out
of here. All this domesticity is driving me crazy.

I need a story. I need to see what’s out there.
They said, “no.” But then I was told later they
were thinking about it.

We’ll see, I suppose.
