Today the girls’ mother, Trina, taught me how to sew.
\nI’m not the most domesticated person in the world.
\nBut, turns out I have a knack for it.<\/p>\n
We are making winter things. The girls’ are not the
\nonly children. The motel is full up.<\/p>\n
I feel incredibly privileged for these people to have
\ntaken me in.<\/p>\n
It is nice that they had only been here at this hotel
\nfor a few weeks before I came along. So it’s like
\nwe are all settling in together. But they brought things
\nfrom the other places they had been. Including
\nthe chickens and there are some goats as well.<\/p>\n
They have shared everything with me.<\/p>\n
Trina and I did not help with the storage building today.
\nI can’t believe how many boxes there are in there.
\nOther people must have just assumed that the
\nbuilding had been gone through already and never
\nbothered to look. That is the only explanation for
\nwhy it is so fully untouched that I can see.<\/p>\n
It helps that this place is just absolutely in the middle
\nof nowhere.<\/p>\n
This evening, after chores and a full day of sewing,
\nand cooking, etc.<\/p>\n
I returned to my room to find a surprise.<\/p>\n
On the table next to the beds. Sat a very old Astoria
\ntypewriter.<\/p>\n
There was a small cardboard box full of extra ink.
\n(Yes, the typewriter is so old it has ink pads which the
\nkeys press into to make the letters. No ribbon.)
\nA ream of paper, placed neatly next to the typewriter
\nand the box of ink, already opened.
\nA sheet of paper was in the typewriter already.<\/p>\n
I had not intended to stay with these people.
\nBut where else was I going to go?<\/p>\n
I am still getting to know everyone. No one
\nseems to know where the typewriter came
\nfrom. We assume from the storage building.
\nIt’s so old it’s almost a relic. But it works.<\/p>\n
On the paper was typed, “For you. The journalist.
\nGlad you’re still here.”<\/p>\n
